Tie-down roper’s hunch pays off at rodeo (w/ results) – Chron
With one shot remaining to advance at RodeoHouston, tie-down roper Hunter Herrin made a call to the bullpen that put him back in the hunt for the $50,000 top prize.
Herrin’s mother, Jamie Nunn, and grandmother were set to travel to Houston from their home in Apache, Okla., to watch him compete in Friday’s wild-card round of the tie-down roping event, and he requested they bring him two horses.
The women left Apache at about 6:30 a.m. Friday and arrived in Houston at approximately 4:30 p.m., slightly more than two hours before the rodeo competition began, with the horses, including a speedy veteran named Uno.
Fortunately for Herrin, Uno turned out to be the one he needed. With Uno’s assistance, Herrin roped his calf in 8.8 seconds to take first place in the wild-card round and secure one of the two remaining spots in today’s championship round at Reliant Stadium. Ryan Jarrett snagged the final spot with a second-place finish of 9.7 seconds.
Herrin, who doubled his earnings to $4,000 on Friday, will head back into the fray today with his old friend.
“I just went back to ‘Old Faithful,’ ” said Herrin, who failed to record a time in the first semifinal Wednesday. “I had really retired him, but through bad circumstances, I’ve had to crack him back out a time or two. I’m awful glad that I did.”
Bad circumstances helped out the top two finishers in the team roping event. The teams of Keven Daniel-Martin Lucero and Derrick Begay-Cory Petska tied for first place and qualified for the championship round by roping their steers in 4.6 seconds, but any mark would have been good enough to advance with the other 10 teams failing to record a time.
Bud Munns overcame a competitive field to win the bareback bronc riding event, scoring 82 on the last ride to edge Dusty LaValley (81). Both riders will advance to the championship round.
Heith DeMoss claimed first place in saddle bronc riding with a score of 82, and he’ll be joined in the championship round by brother Cody, who finished second. Dane Hanna (4.0 seconds) and Matt Reeves (4.1) finished first and second, respectively, in steer wrestling. Jill Moody and Sheena Robbins went 1-2 in barrel racing.
Alvin native Douglas Duncan gave perhaps the best performance of the evening in the bull-riding event, scoring 85.5 to beat Tate Stratton (82.5).
Duncan increased his winnings to $5,000.
